The purpose of the hot work permit checklist is to help everyone involved in the preparation of permit-to-work systems decide if a permit-to-work system covers all the points considered essential in this checklist.
Disclaimer: This sample hot work permit checklist has been designed
for fulfilling the requirement of the SABIC affiliate plant in Saudi Arabia according
to SHEMs 8.10 (ST-OMS-316_F2). Not intended to bypass any SABIC checklist and
rules and regulations but only for educational purposes.
Hot work permit checklist requirements
Hot work poses numerous risks to workers and
facilities, such as fire, explosion, burn etc. Commencement of work should not
begin until the appropriate level of authority has approved the permit to work.
Next, perform a pre-job check to assess whether safety equipment and measures are
in place to prevent accidents and injuries.
If any unsafe condition is discovered during
the Work Permit review, work must be stopped immediately, the work permit was
withdrawn and the situation reported to the higher management (Specify the
Unsafe Condition found). And make sure:
- When work is performed, the safety, supervisor and permit receiver must ensure that the area is free of fire when the job is complete.
- Hot work shall include but is not limited to, the use of gas and electric welding cutting or burn or grinding and entry of the vehicle.
- The hot work area should be cleared of any loose or exposed flammable or combustible materials or liquids. If such combustible material or liquids cannot be removed, they must be protected with fireproof covers. The floors, walls, ceilings, ducts, catch pit, sewer line and partitions of combustible material must also be protected with fireproof covers.
- Hot work shall not be carried out in a potentially explosive atmosphere due to the presence of vapours or dust.
- During the entire hot work period and the examination period after the completion of the work mentioned in the permit, a fire watch with a fire extinguisher of a suitable capacity and type considering the area at risk must be kept available.
- The Assured must ensure that all fire protection controls remain effective during the hot work period, such fire protection controls must include, but are not limited to, fire hoses, sprinkler systems that remain operational and ventilation to avoid the formation of explosive atmospheres.
- The same examination will be conducted continuously for a minimum of 30 minutes after the completion of any hot work before the insured may leave the hot work area unattended.
- Hot work equipment, when ignited, or naked flames should never be left unattended for any period.
- Insured will take all reasonable precautions to avoid accidents and will act by all generally accepted safe work practices and all applicable legal obligations and regulations.
